Dear Christians for Israel friends and partners,

Today is the third evening of Hanukkah ("Festival of Lights"). Tonight, Jewish people all over the world will light three of the eight Menorah candles, in celebration of the rededication of the Temple after the Maccabean revolt in the time of the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.

Hanukkah reminds us that the Jewish people are called to be a light to the nations. In fact the Jewish people have been a blessing to the nations in which they have lived in the diaspora. And today, despite the criticism that dominates our media, the modern Jewish nation is a blessing to the nations.

On Tuesday in Holland, the largest Menorah in the world was lit in the city of Lelystad by Chief Rabbi of the Netherlands Binyomin Jacobs and the Ambassador of Israel to the Netherlands Mr. Aviv Shir-On. Many from the Jewish and Christian communities were present.

Christians for Israel Italy is organising a Hanukkah celebration with the Jewish community in Verona on 17th December. In many other countries Jews and Christians will join in celebrating this festival. We encourage all Christians to take time in the coming days to reflect on the significance of Hanukkah, and our responsibilities as Christians to encourage the Jewish people to continue to be a light to the nations.

In this edition of The Messenger we wish to draw your attention to the many developments in the Christians for Israel ministry worldwide.

We thank you for your ongoing support of our ministry, and wish you all a blessed Advent and Christmas as we celebrate the coming of the Son of man in the flesh, and wait and look for the coming King and Light of the nations.

 Yours,
 Andrew Tucker
Executive Director Christians for Israel International

Thank You For Not Forgetting Us! - Jewish communities in Ukraine

By Anemone Rüger.. A fresh breeze is blowing, carrying first the Ukrainian, then the Israeli national anthem, the Hatikva. The sound travels across a wheat field onto the horizon where horse stables used to be. They served as living quarters for the Jews from the village who were enslaved as forced labourers back then, when first the Germans, then the Romanians occupied this strip of land.

Return from India - A Dream Fulfilled

By Ruben Ridderhof.. The Bible tells us how the kingdom of Israel was divided in the time of King Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, and how the ten tribes of Israel were taken into exile by the Assyrians and dispersed. Yet the prophets Hosea and Ezekiel prophesied that the Lord would one day reunite the twelve tribes. Today it seems like these prophesies are being fulfilled. In North-Eastern India resides a unique group of people called the Bnei Menashe, ‘Sons of Manasseh.’ For centuries they have continued to tell each other about their roots.

From Abraham to Israel Today

By Marie-Louise Weissenböck.. Under the theme ‘From Abraham to Israel today’ a group of 23 participants from Austria, three from Germany and one from Switzerland, toured Israel for nine days, beginning 26 October. Marie-Louise Weissenböck (Regional Director Europe and Chairwoman in Austria) and Moshe Gabay (Keshet Tours Israel) led the tour. The main objective of the tour was to deepen our Biblical understanding of the role Israel and the Jewish nation play in God’s plan of redemption. We achieved this by gaining knowledge of the facts on the ground in Israel today and by meeting various people belonging to Israel’s diverse society.

Jerusalem in the ‘End Times’

By Andrew Tucker.. There is a lot of talk about the end times, or ‘last days’, that have been prophesied in the Bible. The term ‘end days’ in the Bible does not mean the end of the earth or the end of the world. It means the end of a phase of world history (the Greek word is ‘aeon’ meaning ‘vital force’, ‘generation’ or ‘period of time’). In Matthew 24, the disciples ask Jesus “what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?”. Jesus answers by telling them about all the things that will happen before ‘the end’. He talks about ‘birth pains’ (verse 8), wars, famines, earthquakes and other signs of the ‘end’. In all of this, He speaks in the context of the prophecies of the Old Testament which are full of God’s promises to send the Messiah to usher in the kingdom.

The Battle for Jerusalem

By Rev. Willem J. J. Glashouwer.. On 31 October; yes, on the same date that Martin Luther in 1517 hammered his 95 theses on the doors of churches in Wittenberg-Germany and started the great work of the Reformation; the same day the ANZAC soldiers from Australia and New Zealand launched their attack in 1917 on Beersheba that ultimately led to the liberation of Jerusalem from the occupation by the Turkish Ottoman Empire that had occupied Jerusalem and the Holy Land for 400 years. “The events of 31 October 1917 laid the foundation for the Jewish people being able to return officially and legally to their land and to ultimately establish their own State on 14 May 1948”, we read in the article of Kelvin Crombie in the October edition 2017 of our newspaper ‘Israel & Christians Today’.
